World of Hyatt goes from three award tiers to five, and the top Category 8 night now costs 75,000 points
Hyatt's first award-chart restructure in five years replaced Off-Peak, Standard and Peak with five tiers on 20 May 2026. A Category 8 night at the top tier rose from 45,000 points to 75,000, a 67% increase, and 112 of 136 repriced hotels moved up.
World of Hyatt was the last major hotel program with a genuinely predictable award chart, and that reputation is why transferable points flowed into it. The chart is still published and still has fixed thresholds, which matters. But on 20 May 2026 it got twice as many rungs, and the new rungs were added at the top.
What changed
At 8am CT on 20 May 2026, the three redemption levels (Off-Peak, Standard, Peak) became five: Lowest, Low, Moderate, Upper and Top. Categories 1 through 8 survive; each now prices across five tiers instead of three.
The headline number sits at the top of the chart:
| Category 8 night | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest tier | 35,000 points | 35,000 points |
| Most expensive tier | 45,000 points | 75,000 points |
The floor did not move. The ceiling rose 67%, and the spread inside a single category widened from 10,000 points to 40,000. That is the actual mechanism: Hyatt did not raise prices across the board, it gave itself far more room to charge more on the nights people most want.
We are not quoting a Category 1 figure. Our sources give conflicting numbers for the bottom of the chart and no issuer statement resolves them, so it is left out rather than guessed at.
The repricing that came with it
Separately from the tier change, 136 properties were recategorised: 112 moved up a category and 24 moved down. Roughly four hotels got more expensive for every one that got cheaper, which is what a devaluation looks like when it is dressed as a rebalancing.
Hyatt's own announcement frames the five-tier structure as more precise alignment within defined category caps, and says the rollout is gradual, with a limited number of hotels moving a limited number of nights into the Upper and Top tiers during 2026. Both things can be true: the tiers exist now, and most of the damage is still ahead.
The one genuinely good part
Bookings made before 20 May were honoured as booked. Where a property moved up, nobody was asked for the difference; where a property moved down, the difference was returned. That is materially better behaviour than most programs manage during a repricing, and it is worth saying so.
What it means if you transfer points in
Hyatt has been the highest-value destination for flexible points for years, largely because a mid-category property could be had for a fraction of its cash rate. That arithmetic still works at Categories 1 through 6. What has weakened is the aspirational end, the Category 7 and 8 redemption that justified hoarding a large balance in the first place.
The lesson is the same one every award chart eventually teaches: a published chart is a promise about the format, not about the price. Hyatt kept its promise on transparency and still moved the number 67%.
What to do
Stop valuing a Hyatt balance at your old top-end redemption rate. Price the specific stay you want, at the tier it actually falls into, before you decide whether transferring in beats paying cash or taking the statement credit. If the trip is in the next twelve months and the property has not moved yet, booking sooner is genuinely worth more than it used to be.
The points calculator values a balance against what it actually redeems for, and the transfer partner matrix shows which cards still reach Hyatt and at what ratio.
