Flying Blue splits award tickets into Light, Standard and Flex from September 8, 2026: the headline price stays, the ticket gets worse
From September 8, 2026 Air France and KLM award tickets book in three tiers. Light keeps today's mileage price but drops the checked bag, seat selection, lounge access and any right to change or refund. Paris to New York business goes from 60,000 miles to 75,000 for the ticket you get today.
Air France-KLM's Flying Blue is restructuring award tickets from September 8, 2026. The award chart is not going up. Instead, every award booking splits into three fare families, and the cheapest one costs exactly what your ticket costs today while carrying almost none of what your ticket includes today.
This is the cleanest example this year of a devaluation designed to survive a screenshot. Search results will still show the old number.
What the three tiers give you
The change applies to Air France and KLM operated flights in economy, premium economy and business class. Partner airline awards booked with Flying Blue miles are unchanged, and La Première is not affected.
| Light | Standard | Flex | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mileage price | Today's saver level | Higher | Highest |
| Checked bag, economy and premium | None | 1 bag (23kg) | 1 bag (23kg) |
| Checked bag, business | 1 bag (32kg) | 1 bag (32kg) | 1 bag (32kg) |
| Advance seat selection | Paid | Paid until check-in | Included at booking |
| Lounge access in business | Not included | Included | Included |
| Changes and refunds | Not permitted | EUR 70 fee plus fare difference | Included |
The business class line is the one to read twice. A Flying Blue business award has always come with lounge access. From September 8 a business Light award does not.
What it costs to keep today's ticket
Two examples published by Air France-KLM and reported consistently across outlets:
| Route and cabin | Light | Standard | Flex |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paris to New York, business | 60,000 miles | 75,000 miles | 110,000 miles |
| Berlin to Barcelona, economy | 10,000 miles | 13,000 miles | 17,000 miles |
Paris to New York in business is 60,000 miles today with a bag, a seat, the lounge and the ability to change. From September 8 the ticket that carries all of that is Standard, at 75,000 miles. That is a 25% increase on the redemption, with the old number left standing on the cheapest tier as cover.
Intra-Europe economy is worse in percentage terms: 10,000 to 13,000 miles is 30% more for a ticket with a checked bag.
Two things that soften it
Flying Blue elite status benefits still apply on Light fares, so members with status keep their baggage allowance and lounge access regardless of tier. If you hold Flying Blue or SkyTeam status, this change is close to neutral for you.
Awards ticketed before September 8 keep their existing terms. If you have miles sitting in the account and a trip you are confident about, booking before the switch locks in the current rules.
Why this matters if you have never flown Air France
Flying Blue is one of the most widely reachable programs from credit card points. Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou, Capital One, Bilt, Wells Fargo Rewards and Bank of America all transfer to Flying Blue at 1:1. That means a large share of transferable-points balances can reach this program, and every one of those balances just bought a slightly worse ticket.
The general rule holds: transferable points are worth what the receiving program says they are worth, and the receiving program can change that without telling your card issuer. Never speculatively transfer into a program you are not booking with immediately.
What to do
If your points strategy leans on Air France or KLM awards, reprice the trip in Standard, not Light, because Standard is the tier that matches what you are used to. Then check whether a partner program still books the same flight at the old terms, since partner award pricing is unchanged.
Compare where your card's points actually transfer before you move a single point.
